Climate Week: World split on urgency of tackling rising temperatures, poll suggests (reported by BBC News)
A recent global poll, carried out by Globescan, provides fresh evidence that people the world over remain very concerned about climate change, despite the pandemic and subsequent economic impact. However, respondents had very different attitudes to the level of urgency required to tackle the problem. Large majorities in poorer countries strongly agreed with tackling climate change with the same vigour as Covid-19, but in richer nations, the support for rapid action was far more muted. World leaders pledge to halt Earth’s destruction ahead of UN summit (The Guardian)
Leaders from more than 60 countries pledged signed the Leaders Pledge for Nature promising to put wildlife and climate at the heart of post-Covid recovery plans. The commitments made include a renewed effort to reduce deforestation, halt unsustainable fishing practices, eliminate environmentally harmful subsidies and begin the transition to sustainable food production systems and a circular economy over the next decade. International Day of Rural Women celebrates the vital role that rural women play in climate action
Rural women and girls play a significant role in agriculture, food security and nutrition, land and natural resource management and unpaid and domestic care work. In fact, globally, one in three employed women works in agriculture. October 15th was International Day of Rural Women and this year it was themed “Building rural women’s resilience in the wake of COVID-19”.
