Milking the planet: How big dairy is heating up the planet and hollowing rural communities
A report published this week by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), titled ‘Milking the Planet: How Big Dairy is heating Up the Planet and Hollowing Rural Communities’, challenges the dairy sector, specifically 13 of the largest dairy companies, and the impact they are having on GHG emissions and rural communities. The report also draws ‘examples’ from the EU, North America, New Zealand and India to try and reinforce their argument. The report’s authors paint a very homogeneous dairy sector which we all know it is not.
Global Dairy Platform and IDF produced a joint response to address the reports main challenges and to correct any inaccuracies. (Click here to read the Joint IDF GDP statement to IATP Report 2020)
Reports like this emphasize the need for initiatives like the DSF as without sectoral data we are simply not able to challenge or correct data used in reports such as this. Thank you to all DSF Members who have submitted their reporting data this year! We can see from the data how a high percentage of DSF Members have prioritised GHG emissions as a focus for their business sustainability improvement program. Should you need any further information, please do contact the DSF Secretariat.
