Pathways to Dairy Net Zero – How transformative agrifood systems can help achieve the SDGs
As many of you will be aware, last year, the global dairy sector launched Pathways to Dairy Net Zero (P2DNZ), a ground-breaking climate initiative, to demonstrate its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while continuing to provide nutritious foods and livelihoods for billions of people. This month, P2DNZ held one of only four side events during the Committee on Agriculture (COAG) Sub-Committee on Livestock meetings. Amongst the presenters, it was particularly poignant to hear a common theme from Margaret Rugut Kibogy from the Kenya Dairy Board, Marilyn Hershey, a US dairy farmer and chair of Dairy Management Inc., and Margaret Munene, founder of Palmhouse Dairies in Kenya (all of these organizations are DSF members by the way). They all agreed that a diverse range of mitigation options are available to dairy farmers and no one single action is the answer, however, by each farm and part of the value chain playing their part, collectively the global dairy industry can make a positive difference to climate change.
So far nearly 200 leading organisations have declared their support for this key climate initiative, including 9 out of the top 10 largest dairy companies in the world. Supporters include a mix of small, medium and large size organizations located throughout the world, including Asia (including India), Australia, Africa, Europe, South America and North America. The DSF is a founding member of this initiative and is responsible for the progress reporting of the initiative.
