The Global Methane Pledge – an opportunity and a potential challenge
In addition to the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) outcomes at COP26, came an announcement which presents both an opportunity and a potential challenge.
The Global Methane Pledge: More than 100 countries, led by U.S. and EU, launched the Global Methane Pledge, committing to cut emissions of methane by 30% by 2030. It is unclear how the pledge will be practically implemented, though the main focus in the short term should be the fossil fuel industry. It is expected that some of the delivery strategy to implement the pledge will cover agricultural production, one of the leading sectors emitting methane. Major methane emitters like Russia, China and India are not part of the pledge.
