UNFCCC Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture Meetings June 2022
UNFCCC Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture Meetings June 2022
At next week’s Bonn Climate Change Conference is a Subsidiaries Bodies’ (SB) session, the body providing advice to the Conference of the Parties on scientific and technological issues (SBSTA) and the one dealing with advice on implementation aspects of the convention (SBI). This session is meant to advance the negotiations and prepare the decisions of the Parties at COP. Attendees of the session are technical experts of the governments who prepare the text to be adopted by the political leaders at COP. Decisions taken at SBs sessions are technical recommendations, while decisions taken at COP are foreign policy commitments of Parties that bound the national governments globally.
The session is relevant for agriculture as the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) is a joint negotiation item under both SBs. COP 23 requested the SBI and the SBSTA to jointly address issues related to agriculture, including through workshops and expert meetings. At the session, the SBI and the SBSTA are invited to continue their joint work on issues relating to agriculture, including consideration of the draft text elements on the report of the last Koronivia workshop on Sustainable land and water management, including integrated watershed management strategies, to ensure food security. The Parties are also invited to start discussing a draft decision on how to continue the work on agriculture under UNFCCC in the next years. The decision will be further considered and adopted at COP 27 in Egypt, November 2022.
The DSF is delighted to be involved in these discussions (through the UNFCCC accreditation of Global Dairy Platform) and share the sustainability progress of the global dairy sector. It’s an ideal opportunity to further relations with the Parties involved and gain an appreciation for their sustainability thinking and associated policies. This provides an opportunity to explore and even design collaborative and targeted initiatives where the dairy sector can proactively engage and contribute towards tangible outcomes.
