Update from the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15)
Update from the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15)
In December, the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) was held in Montréal, Quebec. Some colleagues from Dairy Farmers of Canada, DSF Implementing Members, attended the Conference and told us how they felt the outcomes of the meeting might impact on the dairy sector. The main outcome from COP15, attained on December 19, 2022, was the adoption of the “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.”
Target 10 of the framework states that areas under agriculture and other related sectors are to be managed sustainably through the increase of biodiversity-friendly practices, such as sustainable intensification, agroecological and other innovative approaches. In addition, the implications of Target 16 will be monitored, as the goal is to enable people to make sustainable consumption choices by establishing supportive policy and regulatory frameworks. There is also an updated plan of action for biodiversity and agriculture, focusing on actions pertaining to the conservation of soils across agricultural landscapes.
DSF Implementing and Aggregating members seeking more focused detail on biodiversity solutions and actions are very welcome to join the DSF Biodiversity Community of Interest. For more details, please contact the DSF Secretariat.
